United We Stand, Together We Fight!
For many years, Puerto Ricans have been the target of hatred and racism due to the establishment of turf gangs in chicago. Although not every puerto rican is a gang member, Puerto Ricans or Latinos in general are all classified as bad people. They are also blamed for the exposition of drugs that are being frequently used by thousands of chicagoans and the increase in violence taking effect in chicago now.
Humboldt Park:
Every year around June 14, all puerto ricans join together to celebrate their culture, but police cars are never too far. The reason why Puerto Ricans are so restricted is because police have a biased opinions that Puerto Ricans cause nothing but trouble, and police need to be around to stop the commotion. The known nieghborhood where many puerto rican residents live is Humboldt Park. Unfortunately, the reputation of Humboldt Park has caused many people to remain distant and not move into the area to avoid any crime. This leaves Puerto Ricans isolated, excluding them from interaction with different cultures in Chicago. Together, they had each others back, which is why the gangs were established in the first place.
Call for Change:
If racism stopped, so would the increase on gang wars. The Latin Kings still deal with daily crime and are involved with police constantly, but that should have a strong effect on all Puertro Ricans because not all people are the same. The Young Lords made a sucess in providng that without violence. They were capable of defending themselves and receiving respect from others. Although racism still goes on, targeting many Latinos, these targeted cultures have made America stronger with the willingless to work for buissnesses and corporations, which the goverment strongly relies on . Without the help we would be at our weakest point in history, so a change needs to be made. Begin by treating everyone equal because we all fought to be called Americans.

Latin KingsLatin Kings take most responsibility of the bias opinions throughout the city of Chicago toward Latinos. Due to their reputations and their actions in current day Chicago, Chicago is portrayed as the next Detroit. The violence has not stopped, and many blame the Hispanics or Blacks. This standard of perception society has laid upon people influenced many to believe that every Latino is that same: dirty, evil, dangerous, etc.

Young LordsThe Young Lords were successful politically, but Whites still felt threatened because Puerto Ricans were acting for a change in the city of Chicago. Although they were going against the government and white oppression, many are confident that the people saw the Young Lords and leaders. They were responsible, organized, and determined. Through self-determination and hard-owkr for the fight against white domination, people were able to perceive some Puerto Ricans as reliable and American. Since the Young Lords have nearly disappeared, the people will only have memories of the accomplishments of this independent organization.
